Hike Day 4: Tjäktja to Sälka >> 12 km
In our opinion, this was the toughest day! At first, we mostly had to go across boulder fields. We were lucky that it hadn't rained, otherwise, the rocks and boulders would be extremely slippery. We crossed the Tjäktja pass that was covered with melting snow. We had to ascend about 150 metres gradually and descend a steep 300 metres. One gets to see the greatest views before starting the descent. That's why to make most of it, we decided to stop and make lunch and absorb the scenery as we filled our stomach.
After the descent, again started the excruciating and never-ending path in the valley across rocks and boulders. There were a few planks, though, here and there, to help us across the boggy spots. The surrounding views are breath-taking, but at the same time, you have to watch every step across the slippery boulders. We were relieved that we had sturdy and light pairs of hiking poles to help us take these tricky steps.
Before reaching Sälka, we found a great secluded spot to pitch our tent in. From this higher spot, we could see the Sälka hut a few kilometres away. As dark, thick clouds came rumbling, we went into our tents and slept for long as we have the next day off! The rolls of thunder eventually stopped and there wasn't any rain!
The next morning D would wake up and find that lemmings had visited us in the night and nibbled on his backpack in the hope of getting some food. Luckily, the tears were very small and didn't need urgent repair.
