Hike Day 2: 2.5km ahead of Abiskojaure to Alesjaure >> 18.5 km

D had woken up early and took a stroll in the surrounding. He discovered that had we walked about 100 metres farther down the hill last night, we would have found a campfire site and a dry toilet as well.

So today our destination was Alesjaure. We knew that this leg was going to be a demanding one, distance-wise. After breakfast, we started the hike. The route goes gradually upwards (about 350 metres) and has sparsed boulders. As you go up and take short breaks to look back, you start admiring the valleys and the mountains in the surrounding. It was a dry and sunny day, so we needed those breaks for frequent sips of water and to munch on trail-mix.

The last 5 km of this leg is interesting. You can either hike or take a boat ride. When we reached the lake, we put up the flag to notify the boat driver at the other end. An extremely jovial guy, he talked about his life here and his family; and how he and his children take care of their reindeer corrals in the surrounding mountains. As the boat sped towards Alesjaure, we caught a glimpse of his village on the foot of one of those surrounding mountains.

Alesjaure is spectacular. We climbed up the rocks, crossed the bridge and camped on higher grounds. The place was quite hustling with many hikers. We pitched our tents, cooked our food and took a stroll around.

Note: The boat ride costs 35 Euros per person. One can either pay in cash in SEKs or in one of the STF huts with a card. Alesjaure has an STF hut which sells food. There is a sauna.
